Jim Driscoll is one of the best technical defensive back coaches in the nation - at any level. His practical application of proven fundamental defensive principles gave his position players a performance advantage every Saturday. As a player and as a coach, I have personally been a beneficiary of his knowledge and expertise. He continues to be a mentor and source of inspiration for me. This book should be in the library of any coach who is serious about helping his defensive backs play sound, fundamental, and winning football. --Jerry Rosburg, Special Teams Coordinator/Associate Head Coach, Baltimore Ravens

I have known Coach Jim Driscoll for several years. We coached together at North Dakota State University for eight years, with Jim as a dedicated defensive backfield coach. During that time, he was instrumental in helping to win two national titles, seven conference titles, and 37 wins in a row. Jim was also part of winning championships as an assistant coach at Northern Michigan University. Reading and teaching the drills and good sound football techniques in this coaching guide will give you a distinct advantage over your opponents. --Ev Kjelbertson, Former Assistant and Head Football Coach, North Dakota State University

About the Author

Jim Driscoll has over 40 years coaching experience, including seven years as a head coach. At the college level, he served as a quarterback/receiver coach, defensive back coach, defensive coordinator, and head coach.

Driscoll has had the opportunity to play for and coach with several outstanding coaches. As a prep at Shanley High School ('60) in Fargo, North Dakota, he played for National High School Hall of Fame coach Sid Cichy, who won 20 state championships in 30 seasons en route to a 231-38-3 record. As a junior, Driscoll started at defensive end and tight end for the undefeated state champions.

Driscoll began his coaching career at St. James High School in Grand Forks, North Dakota, where he also taught math. While working on his master's degree in physical education and education research at the University of North Dakota, he began his college career as a graduate assistant, coaching the undefeated Sioux freshman team in 1968.

From 1978 to 1985, Driscoll coached the defensive backs at Northern Michigan University, were, under head coach Bill Rademacher, he helped shape one of the best defensive units of the era. The Wildcats reached the NCAA Division II Playoffs in 1980, 1981, 1982. In 1980, the Wildcats had the nation's fifth ranked scoring and rushing defense, and were sixth in total defense.

In 1988, Driscoll was hired to develop and coach the inaugural University of Mary (Bismarck, North Dakota) varsity football team. He directed the program until returning for his second stint at Northern Michigan University as defensive coordinator from 1991 to 1995.

Despite retiring after the 2000 season, Driscoll has found ways to stay in coaching by working as a consultant for area high school and college teams. He has also served as a defensive consultant for the Coaches Learning Network. He has published two articles for that network entitled "Force and Contain" and "Team Defense."
